All Deviations

From land to land they travel,
Bringing with them nothing but hopes and memories,
Guarding those lives they have left behind,
Traveling into the darkness without a lamp,
Only the fire in their hearts guides their path.
And friendships they form,
And friendships are torn,
For a questioned cause,
Their lives they give.
What is to show,
This freedom we adorn,
The empty boots,
Sitting on porches at home.
They may never return,
Only an eternal image kept in a frame,
Sitting next to the bed,
And a wife in tears,
Remembering those smiles,
Trapped in a suspended past.
But despite the dangers and risks,
They fight onward without a look back,
Dodging the rock thrown by an angry mob,
Hoping tomorrow’s sun will waken them,
Instead of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.
One thing is for sure, however,
No matter how fate treats these men,
They will be remembered eternally,
As the selfless keepers of peace.

Poem:
Inspired by this picture I took awhile back. I knew I had to dedicate it to those who have fallen on the battlefield, but waited until the perfect time. These are my interpretations of what they have to go through and what they have to leave behind. Whether or not the cause is justified, real people are out there giving it their all. Real emotions, real lives, they all remain at risk. We can only hope for a future free of blood and graves.

Picture:
Taken at the local flower garden. I saw these beautiful flowers -- of which I do not know the name of -- sitting alone. Near them was the American flag so gallantly hanging. I had my friend hold still the flag, forming a background, while I took a picture. I had no idea what it would turn into at the time, but I later realized the yellow has symbolic meaning in regards to the American flag.

I hope everyone enjoys this and dwells, even if just for a minute or two, on the lives of those out there.
